History of project with all variants M-20 well described in book Soviet Secret Projects.Beside maintaining support for the M-4 and 3M bombers fleet Myasishchev`s bureau first tasks were to create a new strategic bomber for the Air Forces.First studies for M-20 bomber begun in 1967.M-20 development was authorised by a further official directive of February 28, 1968 and there were to be three possible versions-an attack and recon bomber carrying missiles and bombs, an aircraft to attack enemy air transports and airborne early warning aircraft, and a long-range anti-submarine aeroplane.They were to be powered by Kuznetsov bypass turbofan engines.A long series of designs were produced, split into four groups of OKB Myasishchev.
