Institute of Biomedical Problems official emblem patch.Established in October 1963 at the initiative of outstanding scientists Sergei Korolev and Mstislav Keldysh. At that time a possibility for long-term manned and unmanned space missions with animals and other biological objects on board was studied, which required extensive in-depth research in space medicine and biology, as well as development of new medical equipment and life-support systems. IMBPL incorporeted specialists in various science and technology fields, including those who had been involved in the first experiments on animals launched on board satellites and in the preparation of the first manned space missions. The institute`s core comprised specialists from a number of laboratories of the Institute of Aviation and Space Medicine of the Ministry of Deffense and the Institute of Biophysics of the Ministry of Public Health.In addition several leading scientists were invited from the USSR Academy of Sciences and Academy of Medical Sciences. IMBPL has provided medical support for all Soviet, Russian and International manned missions (including those lasting over a year) on Soyuz spacecraft, the Salyut, MIR and ISS orbital stations. Patch came from archives of cosmonaut Valeriy Polyakov- one of leading scientists of IMBPL, cosmonaut spent 679 days on board MIR with medical and biological studies, including world`s record duration flight 438 days on MIR (Soyuz TM-18 mission 1994-1995).
