Sukhoi Design Bureau`s purpose was to create a further-improved interceptor.Worls on T-49 started in May 1958 and by october same year existing T-39 was converted to the T-49.Next year test pilot M.Goncharov was appointed to supervise flight testing, but T-49 remained on the ground- much of the time beeing used for various tests- until in January 1960 it was flown by Anatoliy Koznov. He reported outstanding acceleration and perfect all-round performance, but by this time aircraft of this class had been overtaken by later technology.In April 1960 the T-49 was damaged in an inflight accident, and though it was repaired it never flew again.
